Unusual gemstones display...interesting?
I work in a jewelry store. My boss told me yesterday I needed to come up with a display to show more of the loose gemstones we have in the back (ones not set in jewelry), but gave me no further direction (he never does). So I brought out some beautiful, and widely unknown gemstones (like chrysoberyl and natural spinels), and also some downright rare gemstones I'm sure very few, if any of our customers have ever heard of. I then typed up a little info on each type of gem, and displayed our finest examples under it. Would you, as a customer, find it interesting to see some different and rare gems over the standard, well known, "birthstones" at your local jeweler?
I know I would! I love unusual gemstones. Do you have a couple in the raw earth state -uncut and unpolished? sort of a before and after. I've used donuts and cabs of unusual gemstones in a few things I make and sell and the reaction is always interesting. I use ammolite and labradorite and orthocerus --fossils of shells and such go with my "from the earth" aesthetic in hand crafted jewelry. I get a few noses in the air and a few stuck up "i only buy real stones" -I assume meaning diamonds -and I get many who simply fall in love with them as they never knew such things existed. Be sure the display is well lit to bring out color and sparkle and to draw attention to them and perhaps strike a deal with a fashion store: display an unusual gem so it coordinates with a top, scarf, bag or other fashion item. That way your customers will see how an unusual gemstone piece can add that WOW factor to their wardrobe.
