Most modern authors just make up a stone that they “feel” suits the astrological sign, however there were a few ways in which a stone was traditionally chosen for a particular sign.
The first was based on the signs ruling planet. Various stones, like herbs, were categorized under certain planets depending on physical characteristics, for instance red stones were often relegated to mars, Aries ruling planet. So in this line of thought the Jacinth, or red zircon, would be one of the stones of choice.
The second manner in which Astrological stones were assigned was based on the elemental correlation of the sign in question. Aries is cardinal fire, thus the garnet would be more than appropriate.

This stone is often thought to be the bloodstone because of the chart composed by Kuntz, early last centaury. This should not be confused with the birthstone of the month in which a sign begins, in this case the diamond, the modern birthstone for April. This is an error of judgment committed by many new age authors. Birthstones and zodiac stones are two completely different things; birthstones pertain only to a given month, whereas astrological stones are intended to be worn by those born under a given sign. Zodiac signs usually go from the middle of one month to the middle of the next in the Gregorian calendar, according to western astrology.
