Blue Iolite
JEWELRY MAKERs. WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST?
I want to make a tennis style bracelet for my mom for christmas. I plan on using sterling silver pre-notched castings that can be found on Tripps jewelry supply. The stones I'm using are all 4mm. Do you think it would be better to order 5mm castings and bend the prongs in or just use 4 mm castings and hope for a good fit. At $2 a piece I'm already planning to spend around 80 dollars. And I want to keep breakage to a minimum. Also, if anybody has any setting tips they would be appreciated. I'm going to use moonstone, iolite, and blue/green sapphires, and spectrolite/labradorite, a combo I could only make myself.
4mm settings are designed for 4mm stones. On that scale, even settings a millimeter too big simply won't fit the stone and it will be way too much trouble to correct it (a millimeter is huge on that scale). Most of your stones there are fairly hard--at least a 6 on the mohs hardness scale. If you've not done much setting, start with the sapphires. They're the most expensive, but they're also the hardest, so they're less likely to break. Get the setting as tight as possible without tools, and be gentle with your prong pusher, pliers, or setting tool of choice. You may want to tape over the softer stones to avoid scratching them in the setting process. Also, you may want to consider ordering your settings and stones from the same place--some suppliers will have complimentary stones and settings, to ensure a better fit.
