are lab created opals real?

Define "real" if you mean natural, then no, they are not real. Lab opals are called synthetic opals. They are uniform in pattern - where as real opals no two are alike.
diamonds are real and cubic zirconia's are real stones - not manufactured - but marketed as an alternative to diamonds because they are cheaper.
I have worked with opals for 12 years and no synthetic ever came up to the standard of real opal. But if a buyer wants synthetic that's what they will buy.
I have cubic z's that I found and cut but would rather have a diamond.
