how opals are extracted from peridotite ?
I have some fire opals captive in a matrix of peridot or dunnite. Are there any tips on how to free them?
Mechanical removal (i.e. a hammer and chisel) is the only method at home. On large commercial grades there are more technical methods, such as heating and acid washes, but your household bottle of CLR isn't going to do the trick. Even in industry, mechanic shakers and crushers are about 90% of the process (if not all of it).
Just get a hammer and whack it... but do it gently. Don't use any more force than you have to.
