Opal is not rare at all. Common opal can be found in petrified wood in Arizona. Gem quality opal is not so common and the more color in the opal the more precious it becomes. Red fired opals are the most desired other than checkered opals which are very rare.
Opal can be more expensive than diamonds or worthless. It depends on the opal. Opal is a fragile gem that must be protected from heat and dryness and scratching.
Opal has no commercial or industrial uses other than jewelry.
