how can I find the value of an opal with Australia appearing in the matrix?
the opal is 5.6carats with the continent of Australia appearing vividly in a black opal from lightning ridge in Aus brought back by me a few years ago
There is no easy way, short of taking it to have it professionally valued by a licensed gemologist. Opals are one of the most difficult stones to judge, and from what you've said, the outline of the continent of Australia *might* possibly give it extra value.
Like many other gems, the weight only tells part of the story. Whereas a diamond's value is determined by its color, clarity and freedom from inclusions, an opals value is somewhat inversely determined by those same factors. What would make a diamond less valuable might make an opal more valuable.

But it is the story of the opal fields themselves that dominates - gleaned from a family history steeped in the legends of the "great finds"and of the characters wh... |
