What is London Blue Topaz?
Is it simulated or natural
Topaz is a natural stone however the London Blue colour is created by exposing colourless material to very intense radiation from an electron accelerator or in a nuclear reactor at rates of up to 40,000 Mrad. In early stones there was a problem with with residual radioactivity but this has been overcome by the use of very pure colourless material which does not contain the trace elements that caused the trouble.
Another stone on the market is "Mystic Topaz" which is natural topaz that has been surface coated with metal oxides to produce a shimmering rainbow effect as you move it about (like the coating put on lenses) It is not very resistant to ware and soon gets scratched and worn making it look very tatty.
