How can I tell aquamarine from (blue) topaz?
I bought a pair of earrings from a jewellry store that is closing for business. According to the price tag which did not indicate what kind of gemstone they were, their original price was about $270. After 70% off and additional 20%, I paid $67. They have very light or pale blue colour. All sales are final. I have a strange feeling that I got cheated. How do I know if they are aquamarine or blue topaz earrings?
topaz is harder (8.0) than aquamarine (7.5) on the Mohs hardness scale. Only a geologist, mineralogist, or gemologist would care about the difference. You got a bargain, whatever the stone really is. Glass has hardness of 5 to 5.5 . Do a scratch test on a pane of glass to see if it is harder than glass, Since I chipped and scratched the aquamarine that is supposedly in my college class ring on granite(quartz is 7 on the Mohs hardness scale) during geology field camp, I know that it is colored glass, Yes I was was aware that colored glass would probably be used when I ordered it in 1974, 6 years before I got my B.S. in geology in 1980.
